Saint Antonin Noble Val

(Local Name: Musée Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec) In Albi, a little way southwest of the Hôtel de Ville is the handsome 18th C mansion in which Toulouse- Lautrec was born. It contains a few mementos of the painter and works by him. Adjoining the Toulouse-Lautrec mansion is a Wax Museum, with displays illustrating local history.
In Albi, the church of St-Salvi, built on the foundations of a Carolingian church, and the monastery to which it belonged were begun in the 11th C, but the work was interrupted by the Albigensian wars and continued into the 13th C. A number of capitals and the small apses in the choir still date from the Romanesque period. The lower part of the tower dates from the 11th C, the upper part, which shows Gothic influence, from the 14th. The cloister was added in the 13th C.

This annual three-week festival runs from mid-July to early August and includes concerts by major symphonies, choral groups and chamber orchestras, as well as recitals by famous pianists. There are usually over 10 different events, taking place in venues such as the Berbie Palace, the St Cecile Cathedral and the Madeleine Church.

The dominant architectural feature of Albi is the fortress-like Cathedral of Ste-Cécile, one of the great achievements of the brick-built Gothic of southern France, which was begun in 1282, on the site of an earlier church, and completed in 1480. The nave is almost 100 m/330ft long, 20 m/65ft wide and 30 m/100ft high; its defensive walls tower to a height of 41 m/ 135ft. The massive tower was increased in height in the 15th century.

The Cathedral is entered through the south doorway and a richly decorated porch known as the Baldaquin. The aisleless nave is separated from the choir by an elaborately carved French roof screen of about 1500, unfortunately almost all the statues which were on it have been lost. Along the north and

south sides are a series of square chapels separated by projecting piers, which appear on the outside of the building as small engaged round towers. The choir has rich sculptural decoration, with angels on the inside and Old and New Testament figures on the outside; Burgundian influence is evident in the carving. On the inside of the west front is a fresco of the Last Judgment (late 15th C; damaged in 17th and 18th C). The organ was installed in 1734-1736.

In Albi, to the north of the Cathedral, standing above the Tarn, is the Albi Palais de la Berbie (from a Romance word bisbia, ”bishop”), another fortress-like structure built in the 13th and 14th centuries. Originally the archbishop’s palace, it now houses the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum.

These restored gardens feature some elaborate scrollwork of dwarf box and summer bedding plants.

(Local Name: Musée d’Aquitaine) The Museum of Aquitaine in Bordeaux vividly illustrates the history of the city and the region from prehistoric times to the present day.

The museum was originally opened in 1783 to display gemstones. In 1862, the museum took its current name and became a depository of local history, archaeology and ethnography. There are 4 levels in the Museum of Aquitaine with permanent and temporary exhibitions.

In the south of the old town is the Cathedral of St André, which is comparable in size with Notre-Dame in Paris. The nave, built in the 12th C, was altered in the 13th and 15th centuries; the choir and transepts date from the 14th century.

The west front is plain, since it was too close to the town walls. The finest feature of the exterior is the north doorway, richly decorated with sculpture (Last Supper, Ascension, Christ in Majesty) and flanked by two tall towers.

Also on the north side is the Porte Royale, with fine 13th century sculptural decoration (five figures of Apostles on each side of the doorway, Resurrection of the Dead on the lintel, Last Judgment in the tympanum). Opposite the west front of the cathedral is the former Archbishop’s Palace (18th C), now the Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall), with a handsome staircase hall and finely appointed rooms.

A Superb Commemorative Monument

Place des Quinconces
Bordeaux,
33000

Neighborhood: City centre – Mériadeck

Erected between 1894 and 1902 in memory of the Girondin officials who fell victim to the Reign of Terror following the French Revolution, this column stands 43 meters tall and features a superb fountain in the heart of the city, in one of the greatest plazas in Europe. Its summit is topped with a statue of ”Freedom breaking its shackles”. Among the imposing statues one can aso find ”the Triumph of the Republic” (towards the Grand Théâtre), which recalls the fundamental laws of the nation, and ”the Triumph of the Concord” (towards the quartier des Chartrons), protecting brotherhood. The bronzes of the fountain were restored in 1983.

Beautiful & Historic Church Facade

Rue François-de-Sourdis
Bordeaux,
33000

Neighborhood: City centre – Mériadeck

This church of the historical center-city is only a few steps from the Chartreuse cemetery. Built in 1611, it was originally called the ”chapelle des Chartreux” and was consecrated by the Cardinal of Sourdis in 1620. Its most arresting characteristic is its facade, inspired by the Italian style of the era, but the overall style is Baroque. On either side of the altar, the marble statues of the Virgin and of the archangel Gabriel by Bernini & Sons are particularly remarkable

Expressive Wines

Château Branaire Ducru
Saint Julien,
33250

Neighborhood: Outside the city

Phone: +33 5 56 59 25 86

This winery has a long history firmly entwined with the social and political events of the region. It has been the business and property of two families through successive generations, and the same can be said some of the individual vines which reach 100 years of age. The wines are balanced and have spicy undertones, and should be aged for a decade to reach peak maturity.

Small Vineyard & Winery

1 Vignobles Aubert
Saint Antoine Du Queyret
Saint-Emilion,
33330

Neighborhood: Outside the city

Phone: +33 5 57 40 15 76

The fact that La Couspaude is actually located within the medieval town of Saint-Emilion sets it apart from most vineyards of the region, and its small size limits the distribution of the fine wines produced here. Three varieties of grapes are grown on the estate, and the wine made from them is well-structured, balanced, and elegant. The wine is aged for 16-20 months in new oak barrels.
